A Memorable Event: My First Math Competition
Do you have a favourite subject? Mine is Mathematics. This March, I took part in my first ever Mathematics competition. It was called the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad or SASMO. My mother signed me up for the competition because she knows how much I like Maths.
It took me one year to prepare for this competition. I practised Mathematics worksheets four times a week leading up to competition day. On the day of the SASMO competition, my father drove my mother and me to the venue. It was held in the late afternoon at National University of Singapore or NUS. Upon entering the event hall, we quickly register for the competition.
Once all the participants were seated in a large room, the timer was started and we were allowed to begin. At first everyone was focused on solving the Mathematics questions. However, in the middle of the competition, a fellow participant stood up from his seat and went totally bonkers. He walked up to the timer and reset it! One of the invigilators told him to return to his seat but he continued playing with the timer. After several attempts to stop him, the invigilator was finally able to get him to return to his seat.
Soon, the one and a half hours were up and all our papers were collected. In my opinion, the Mathematics questions were extremely hard but I was able to answer all the questions within the allotted time. There were a total of 25 pages with one question for every page.
My mother and I waited with anticipation for the results which were announced a few months later. I received a Bronze medal and felt extremely proud of my achievement. It was a great experience.
Thank you for listening.
